Rhino protection can become a success despite a myriad of challenges. But while rhino populations in India continue to thrive, this figure obscures the fact that rhinos in Southern Africa continue to suffered huge losses (2025 deaths between 2017 and 2021). The reasons behind these differences are rooted in two fundamentally different ways of looking at nature and wildlife and the the resulting genuine political will.
